For Kids

Fun Activities
Secret codes
  • Each student is assigned 2 people to compliment.
  • After writing their compliments out, he or she encodes the compliments using a secret coding key.
  • The secret messages are then given to the recipients for decoding. Once decoded, students share their received compliments by reading them out loud.

Compliment journals

  • A small book is made for each child with their name at the top of the page.
  • Students sit in circle (or any configuration which will work), passing their compliment journals to the right.
  • Each student then writes a compliment in the journal.
  • Journals are continually passed along and written in until they return to the owner of the journal.
  • It is wonderful to have teachers and classroom staff be part of the circle, also having journals.

Compliment collections

  • Another variation to the journal is to hand out a piece of paper listing all the students in the class with room for compliments.
  • You can then compile compliment collections. This is more work but some teachers prefer to do it this way

Family compliments

  • Incorporate compliments into an art project.
  • Create a "What I like about you" poem for a family member(s). This could be framed, printed on handmade paper, put into a card, or any numerous other things
Community compliments
  • What's so wonderful about community compliments is that they help to raise students' awareness of the many people outside of their family - youth group leaders, clergy, a family friend, a music or dance teacher, the bus driver, next door neighbor, best friend, etc. - who enrich their lives.
  • Can they find five people who make a difference to them?
  • What is it they like about them? Give an example
