For Seniors

Fun Activities
Compliment cards
  • An advantage of being older is having the time and distance to reflect on and appreciate your life and those who have been a part of it.
  • Compliment day is the perfect time to tell those people who make, or have made, a positive impact on our your life how grateful you are.
Saying it out loud is wonderful, but putting it in writing has a powerful effect. It also allows the recipient that chance to reread the compliment many times.
  • In a group setting blank cards and envelopes could be provided. Also for those how need it - physical help with the writing.

Compliment journals - group activity

  • A small book is made or purchased for each senior with his or her name at the top of the page.
  • Seniors sit in circle (or any configuration which will work), passing their compliment journals to the right.
  • Each senior then writes a compliment in the journal.
  • Journals are continually passed along and written in until they return to the owner of the journal.
  • If this is being done at a senior center or some place comparable, it is wonderful to have staff be part of the circle, also having journals.

Compliment collections

  • Another variation to the journal is to hand out a piece of paper listing all the students in the class with room for compliments.
  • You can then compile compliment collections. This is more work but some people prefer to do it this way

Family compliments

  • Incorporate compliments into an art project.
  • Create a "What I like about you" poem for a family member(s). This could be framed, printed on handmade paper, put into a card, or any numerous other things
Community compliments
  • What's so wonderful about community compliments is that they help to raise everyone's awareness of the many people outside of their family - caregivers, clergy, a family friend, a teacher, sales clerk, next door neighbor, best friend, etc. - who enrich their lives.
  • Can you find five people who make a difference to them?
  • What is it you like about them? Give an example. Now tell the person face-to-face or in writing.
The benefits of Compliment Day activities
  • Helps maintain a positive and caring attitude towards others
  • Raises awareness of positive qualities of others
  • Builds a sense of community for groups
  • Models, encourages, and rewards kindness
  • Everyone feels great
